Let me introduce myself and share a little about how I arrived to where I am now as creator and facilitator of P.L.A.N.E.T. Zoom. My name is Sarah Martin. I was born and lived my early childhood years on The Farm, a former commune and now intentional community in Tennessee. My family moved to Nashville when I was 11, and I lived there the rest of my pre-teen and teenage years. I graduated from Hume Fogg Academic High School and went onto the University of Tennessee Knoxville, where I graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1999. 

 

Life often brings us full circle and that is what happened when I graduated from UT. I felt drawn to move back to this incredible piece of woods on which I had grown up. I reconnected with childhood friends and even ended up marrying one of them! My partner and I then had and raised our two children back here at The Farm. 

 

I have been a homeschooling mom for the past 19 years.  Our family’s homeschooling journey has taken many twists and turns, as most do.  We are each constantly growing and changing, and the ways that we learn best grow and change as well.  What works one day may not work the next.  And each human is so very different. One aspect that I have found that never changes is that when we are joyful in our environment and in learning, we have the most productive, enriching and fulfilling time. 

 

Along with being a homeschooling mom, I have taught at The Farm School in Summertown, Tennessee since 2016, in numerous capacities, including serving as the Co-Director for two years.  When the Covid pandemic began, like much of the world, we all moved to a virtual learning format. This was new and strange for all of us. I have now been teaching multiple Zoom courses since Fall of 2020 for ages ranging from 6-15. And the most incredible thing happened:  I fell in love with virtual teaching!  I love getting to reach so many different young learners from all over (the county, state, and planet…!) and helping them to meet and learn together with others they may not have met otherwise. So, I am very excited now to be working independently and be able to offer my Zoom courses to a much larger community of homeschoolers.
